If your Subaru has more than 100,000 miles on it and you are just now having issues with leaking cylinder head gaskets, consider yourself lucky. Your shop costs should total upwards of a thousand dollars. Many dealerships will attempt to charge you $1,200 or more. Do not pay over $1000. This repair is too common and routine for the mechanics now - do not listen to them tell you it is a "difficult job". It is fairly time consuming for one person to pull the motor and get to the head gaskets, so 10+ hours of labor should be expected. Offer to buy the parts if they try to highball you and see if that calms them down. The parts can be found on this site and are very reasonable.
