Many of the engines with controversial head gasket problems are failing at 50,000 miles or less. This is unacceptable. More commonly, if you are going to experience a faulty cylinder head gasket, it is going to happen between 75,000 and 100,000 miles. When taking your car to a dealer for head gasket work, keep in mind that the vehicle was certainly not supposed to have this problem when they sold it brand new. The repair is too time-consuming and substantial to be expected before 75,000 miles. The younger your engine and the time of head gasket problem, the more liable the manufacturer appears. There have been countless internet postings from people who have sweet-talked their local dealerships into covering these repairs for $400 or less. We never expect our cars to be perfect, but $1200 out of pocket for repairs on a vehicle that's only 2 years old is a bit absurd.
